An atheist in Wisconsin has purchased advertising space on a billboard to proclaim the atheistic gospel as a legacy for his grandchildren. Wayne Hensler's billboard reads, "Enjoy life now; there is no afterlife." Hensler is a member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), whose co-president Dan Barker claims that "religion misdirects human energies from this world--our only life--to some unprovable, highly improbable imaginary afterlife" ("Atheist Aims to Leave 'Legacy,'" Christian News Network, Nov. 1, 2013). In reality, religions are not created equal and to lump them all together is sloppy thinking, to say the least. The "religion" of New Testament Christianity teaches "that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works" (Titus 3:8). And no one can calculate the good that has been done in this troubled world by Bible-believing Christians--the clinics and hospitals that have been built, the wells that have been dug, the slaves that have been liberated, the hungry that have been fed, the widows, orphans, elderly, abused, addicts, and drunks that have been helped, the evil lives that have been transformed, the child prostitution and cannibalism that has been stopped. The atheist gospel is a pathetic thing: eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow you die. Contrast this with the gospel of Jesus Christ: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Mr. Hensler, who is in his 80s, will be probably free from religion soon. (Friday Church News Notes, November 8, 2013, www.wayoflife.org, [email protected], 866-295-4143) Comments are closed.
